About Us: The Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming systems of injustice and fostering opportunities for empowerment and achievement through education, support, and advocacy for individuals affected by the justice system. We are a community-driven organization that prioritizes harm reduction, healing, and the experiences of those we serve.
Position Overview: THEI is seeking a full-time Educational Program Coordinator to manage the daily operations of our Academic Programs within Tennessee correctional facilities. Reporting to the Director of Education Programs, the Coordinator will collaborate closely with prison administration and staff, as well as contacts at partner colleges, to facilitate Bachelor’s and Associate degree programs for incarcerated individuals. This role includes providing essential in-person support to students who may have limited access to information and communication.
Key Responsibilities:
- Student Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with THEI students across various cohorts, advocating for their needs and facilitating effective communication with partners.
- Program Logistics: Oversee the logistics of academic programs, ensuring a seamless experience for students during the academic year.
- College Preparation: Manage the admissions process for the College Prep program, maintaining detailed records and ensuring all educational materials are accessible.
- Collaboration with Prisons: Establish rapport with prison staff, oversee program implementation, and adapt to the dynamic environment of correctional facilities.
- Partnership with Colleges: Serve as a liaison between incarcerated students and educational institutions, ensuring smooth communication and support for course execution.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of an Associate degree; Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred.
- At least one year of experience in education, training, or a related role.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to travel regularly to correctional facilities.
- Commitment to social justice and equity.
