Job Title: Senior Laser Safety Specialist

Job Summary:

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a highly skilled Senior Laser Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Health and Safety Services department, you will be responsible for providing laser safety services that promote safe and compliant facilities and ensure environmental quality for the University community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compliance Review and Assurance: Participate in the laser laboratory compliance inspection program, perform routine laser laboratory onsite safety assessments, and ensure laser use environment meets State regulatory requirements and other applicable standards.
  • Laser Beam Hazard Evaluations: Perform laser beam hazard evaluations, produce reports and documentation, including recommendations for protection of laser users, facilities, and the public.
  • Laser Safety Program Management: Review and approve new laser purchases, collect and confirm laser emission parameters for new or current lasers, and assist in update, maintenance, and upgrade of the Laser Safety Program database files.
  • Reporting and Communication: Report to the Associate Director and Assistant Radiation & Laser Safety Officer, demonstrate the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously, and meet assigned deadlines.
  • General Safety and Compliance Support: Provide general safety and compliance support to the Radiation and Laser Safety group, including support for radioactive materials, X-ray devices, radio-frequency emissions, sampling, surveys, and other activities as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited academic institution in Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Radiation Biology.
  • More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety experience at an academic research institution.
  • Certified in one or more of the following CHP, CSP, CLSO, CIH or comparable certification.
  • USDOT, ICAO, IATA Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification.
  • Texas Commercial Driver License with hazardous material endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited academic institution in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety compliance.
  • Eligible to be certified in one of the following Certified Health Physicist CHP by American Academy of Health Physicists, Certified Safety Professional CSP by Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Certified Laser Safety Officer CLSO by Board of Laser Safety, Certified Industrial Hygienist CIH by American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

Working Conditions:

Additional Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend.
  • May be required to operate job related equipment.
  • May be required to perform elevated work.
  • Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
  • May work around lasers, radiation, and magnetic fields.
  • Participate in on-call program.

Work Shift:

  • 40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, 08:00 AM - 05:00 PM.
