Starting Salary: The initial pay for this role is set at the lowest point of the specified pay range. A higher salary may be negotiated based on the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate, in accordance with the organization's step placement policy.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Municipal Counselor's Office provides legal advice and representation to public officials and employees involved in municipal operations. This position operates under the direction of the Municipal Counselor and may be reassigned to different divisions based on departmental needs.

POSITION SUMMARY

This role is situated within the Litigation Division of the Office of the Municipal Counselor and reports to the Law Office Administrator or a designated representative. The Legal Assistant I will offer legal support to the attorneys in the office. Key responsibilities include: assisting in various aspects of litigation and legal representation, such as conducting legal research, preparing and organizing documents, developing trial notebooks, and attending depositions and court hearings as required. Additionally, the Legal Assistant I will handle a diverse range of legal tasks, including drafting responses to discovery requests and preparing legal documents under the supervision of a staff attorney. A solid understanding of legal processes, civil procedures, and the hierarchy of laws is necessary. This role may also involve providing administrative support to attorneys.

PREFERENCE FOR VETERANS

Honorably discharged veterans from the United States Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City and meet the qualifications for this position will receive preference. To qualify for this preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge prior to the closing of the vacancy announcement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of an associate degree from an ABA-approved Legal Assistant Program or a Legal Assistant Certification.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a law office setting.
  • Proficiency in using computerized legal research tools, such as Westlaw.
  • Ability to utilize legal reference materials and standard legal research methods to locate, analyze, and prepare reports on statutes, court rulings, legal opinions, and other legal documents.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a variety of information.
  • Proficiency in Windows Office applications and the OSCN system.
  • Capability to draft and revise legal documents using a personal computer.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Aptitude for establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with municipal officials, employees, external agencies, and individuals.
  • Commitment to ensuring the accuracy of work performed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primarily indoor work in a climate-controlled environment, involving extended periods of sitting, standing, and using a telephone.

  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard.
  • Near vision to read and draft documents.

  • Adequate hearing to communicate in person and by phone.
