Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Specialist to join our Public Works team in the City of Hopewell, VA. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing intermediate skilled trades work on a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, water and sewer lines, buildings, and related facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a range of equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, and chainsaws, to perform construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.
  • Perform skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, including spreading asphalt and patching holes in street surfaces.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair manholes, catch basins, curbs, retaining walls, and drainage lines, and build and set forms and finish concrete.
  • Clear roadsides of snow, litter, overgrown grass, and brush, and perform ditch cleaning and grading to ensure proper drainage.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance to assigned equipment.
  • Mow grass, edge sidewalks and curbs, weed eat, and trim trees.
  • Set up for various events, including setting up tents, tables, and chairs, and putting up and removing decorations and barricades.
  • Pick up refuse, trash, limbs, leaves, and other debris, and transport to appropriate facilities.
  • Maintain a variety of records and reports on activities, including logging daily reports.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in general construction, maintenance, and/or grounds keeping work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License, Class B, valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.
  • Obtain CPR, AED, and VDOT Flagger certifications within six months of hire.
Working Conditions

Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, traffic conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, odors, heights, dust, and hazardous materials.
