Pharmacy Technician Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will compound sterile products in accordance with principles of aseptic technique and prescriber orders, company policies, and procedures. The successful candidate will perform activities associated with maintaining the pharmacy, including inventory management, quality assurance, and cleanliness.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform activities associated with inventory maintenance, including ordering and stocking supplies.
  • Complete quality assurance activities and quality control records for documentation of appropriate sterile compounding processes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pharmacy and equipment in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Enter patient medication orders into the home infusion order entry system.
  • Maintain keys and exercise access to drug storage areas.
  • Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to medication distribution and dispensing and disposal.
  • Utilize various equipment, including Baxa pumps, label printers, laser report printers, and computer keyboards/terminals.
  • Utilize aseptic technique in the MIC to prepare sterile products, including cytotoxic drugs, in single doses.
  • Utilize automated compounding equipment in the MIC to compound parenteral nutrition solutions.
  • Participate in the orientation of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.
  • Communicate with other healthcare personnel and assist pharmacists with the orientation and on-the-job training of all new technicians.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Perform administrative technician duties as assigned by the Pharmacist in charge.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, including a general mathematics course.
  • Current Iowa Pharmacy Technician Certification or must become certified within one year of employment.
  • Combination of related experience and related post-high school education to equal a minimum of one year.
  • One year experience as a Pharmacy Technician, or one year of experience in a position directly related to the natural sciences, or one-year post-high school education in the natural sciences or related area.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Home Infusion pharmacy experience and clinical pharmacy experience are desirable.
  • Job-related experience with sterile compounding is highly desirable.
