Overview

Accountable for comprehensive patient care from the initial assessment through the recovery phase.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Surgical Care Nurse at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Serving as a mentor for new nursing staff: Promotes a supportive training environment and actively participates in the orientation process. Functions as a scrub or circulating nurse in the operating room as required, ensuring all duties are performed competently. Keeps preference cards updated and collaborates with physicians to ensure accuracy in documentation.

2. Conducting daily environmental checks including temperature, humidity, and sterilization logs: Ensures compliance with safety standards and maintains acceptable levels of environmental conditions.

3. Developing and maintaining an effective inventory management system for surgical supplies: Works closely with management and medical staff to ensure all necessary materials are available and in good working order prior to procedures.

4. Delivering high-quality patient care in accordance with established perioperative standards: Conducts thorough patient assessments and addresses educational needs throughout the surgical process. Ensures documentation is complete and adheres to nursing care standards.

5. Upholding a safe clinical environment by strictly following safety protocols: Responds effectively to various situations while maintaining a calm demeanor.

6. Leading the team in efficient room turnover procedures: Ensures compliance with cleaning protocols to facilitate timely patient care.

7. Assisting in the recruitment and development of nursing staff: Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages team engagement and performance improvement.

8. Involvement in budget management for assigned areas: Regularly reviews financial indicators and adjusts operations as necessary to align with financial goals.

9. Analyzing and reporting relevant data as needed: Proposes and implements process improvements based on data findings.

10. Performing additional duties and projects as assigned.

11. Participating in administrative on-call responsibilities on a rotating basis.

12. Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of conduct.

13. Physical requirements include lifting a minimum of 5 lbs., pushing and pulling a minimum of 5 lbs., and standing for at least 1 hour daily.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within three years of employment.

2. At least 5 years of experience in the operating room and teaching experience in clinical settings.

3. Ability to collaborate effectively within a team; proficient in scrub and circulating roles; strong communication and delegation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Certification in Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

1. Current New Jersey Registered Nurse License.
