Job Summary:

This internship is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona, including virtual office arrangements. The State of Arizona strives to provide a work environment that allows employees to work remotely, in offices, or in hoteling spaces, while ensuring that all work, including remote work, is performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Job Duties:

The intern will gain experience leading a project and will be responsible for:

  • Developing a State Management Action Plan (SMAP) and assisting with a reassessment of the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Program.
  • Working with leadership to develop the SMAP workplan skeleton.
  • Conducting desktop and historical document research to identify data gaps (risk plus factors).
  • Conducting interviews or community outreach with local governments.
  • Assisting with planning of the annual Arizona Forum Meeting with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
  • Assisting with web design and GIS for development of a Story Map.
  • Potentially assisting with drone and imaging/resolution assistance with the GIS team.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

The intern will gain experience leading a project and will bring the following to the internship:

  • A basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the ability to quickly learn.
  • A strong foundation in environmental science.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with the Unit Manager, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Project management skills to prioritize tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines while assisting with various projects.
  • Attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and completeness of data and reports.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other interns, staff, and stakeholders in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Computer skills to use computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with program managers, staff, and stakeholders effectively.

Selective Preference(s):

The following selective preferences will be given to candidates:

  • The intern candidate must be in their Junior or Senior year of a BS/BA or working towards a Masters/PhD program.
  • Selective preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in geology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or environmental policy.
  • The candidate must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • The candidate must have the right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship.
  • The candidate must be at least 18 years old.
