Position Overview

The Environmental Health Specialist I-III (COR) is responsible for ensuring adherence to environmental health standards and regulations. This role involves conducting specialized inspections and investigations to assess compliance with applicable laws.

Key Responsibilities

1. **Conduct Inspections**: Perform detailed field inspections and investigations to evaluate compliance with environmental health regulations.
2. **Evidence Collection**: Gather evidence related to violations and non-compliance with environmental health laws.
3. **Reporting**: Prepare comprehensive inspection reports, legal notices, and citations to enforce environmental health regulations.
4. **Liaison Role**: Act as a liaison with various governmental agencies and partners to facilitate compliance and address public health concerns.
5. **Training Participation**: Attend training sessions and contribute to the development of staff training programs.
6. **Legal Preparation**: Prepare documentation and evidence for administrative hearings and court presentations.

District Environmental Services

In addition to the above duties:

1. **Regulatory Inspections**: Conduct inspections of retail food facilities, public pools, mobile home parks, and other related establishments.
2. **Complaint Investigations**: Review and investigate public complaints regarding foodborne illnesses and other health-related issues.
3. **Sample Collection**: Collect samples for laboratory analysis as necessary.
4. **Operator Instruction**: Educate facility operators on health and safety practices.

Hazardous Materials Management

In addition to the general responsibilities:

1. **Hazardous Waste Inspections**: Conduct inspections of hazardous waste facilities to ensure compliance with relevant laws.
2. **Emergency Response**: Oversee the mitigation of hazardous substance releases during emergencies.
3. **Equipment Management**: Ensure availability and maintenance of detection and safety equipment.

Qualifications

1. **Education**: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, meeting the educational standards for Registered Environmental Health Specialists.
2. **Licenses/Certificates**: Valid certification as an Environmental Health Specialist or eligibility letter from the California Department of Public Health.
3. **Driver's License**: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

1. **Mobility**: Ability to navigate various field environments, including construction sites and hazardous materials facilities.
2. **Strength**: Capability to lift and carry equipment as required.
3. **Environmental Exposure**: Willingness to work in diverse conditions, including inclement weather and exposure to various materials.

Knowledge and Skills

1. **Environmental Health Principles**: Understanding of physical, biological, and chemical sciences as they relate to environmental health.
2. **Regulatory Knowledge**: Familiarity with state and local laws governing environmental health.
3. **Analytical Skills**: Ability to analyze situations and take effective action to ensure compliance.
