Clinical Nurse Specialist II - APHERESIS 40 Hour Work Week

Position Overview:

At the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the Clinical Nurse Specialist II will engage in therapeutic apheresis, cellular therapy collections, transfusions, and hydration procedures for patients with sickle cell disease. Our therapeutic apheresis program is esteemed as one of the leading programs in the United States, delivering essential quality-of-life therapies to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Registered Nurse; two years preferred.
  • Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are mandatory, with courses accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Experience in apheresis is advantageous but not a prerequisite.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a valid RN license through the Texas Board of Nursing (TX BON) are required.

Key Responsibilities:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist II will perform and meticulously document comprehensive physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, taking into account age-specific criteria for all patient demographics (children, adolescents, adults, and seniors).

Proactively anticipate the needs and expectations of patients and their families, integrating these insights into the assessment process to formulate an effective care plan.

Employ critical thinking in the organization and prioritization of nursing care, ensuring adherence to unit competencies.
Identify and execute suitable nursing interventions based on thorough assessments, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of all actions taken. Act as a pivotal coordinator for the interdisciplinary care plan, collaborating with all healthcare team members to advocate for optimal patient outcomes.
Prioritize nursing interventions based on comprehensive assessments, promptly recognizing changes in patient conditions through assessments, laboratory results, and imaging studies. Report any changes and take appropriate follow-up actions. Involve patients, families, and caregivers in the care process actively.
Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented interventions and adjust care plans as necessary, documenting all modifications accurately and promptly.
Comply with hospital and nursing department policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally recognized nursing standards. Incorporate ANA standards into the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care, utilizing current literature and research.

Adhere to our Professional Practice Model - "Relationship-Based Care" and deliver care in alignment with our Care Delivery System "PACE" - Patient-Focused, Accountable, Coordinated, Continuous, and Evidence-Based.

Provide timely and appropriate responses and education to patients, their families, and caregivers. Document all educational interactions accurately, including discharge planning. Assess patient understanding and competence, obtaining feedback from patients and families.
Welcome and orient patients and their families to the unit, encouraging their involvement in care. Review personalized care plans with patients and families during each shift, updating whiteboards and setting daily goals collaboratively. Explain special diets, tests, procedures, and medications in clear and accessible language. Conduct hourly rounds on patients and communicate expected return times.
Advocate for resources and support that enhance patient safety and contribute to unit and hospital initiatives. Participate in evaluating data to inform decisions regarding unit and department budget formulation and implementation.
Conduct peer evaluations to provide constructive feedback to colleagues regarding performance. Hold team members accountable for their actions and adherence to policies and standards, intervening when patient safety is compromised.

Commitment to Improvement:
Take responsibility for patient care and quality/safety initiatives (e.g., patient safety, satisfaction, core measures, infection control). Foster a collaborative team environment and participate in multidisciplinary quality and practice improvement teams.
Share professional and technical knowledge with colleagues and students.

Offer support as needed to others (e.g., preceptor, charge nurse, mentor, unit expert) and engage in meetings and committees, representing the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
