Job Summary

As a Research Associate, you will play a critical role in supporting research initiatives in an assigned laboratory or clinical research unit. Your responsibilities will include participating in research data collection and documentation, developing and evaluating new research techniques and procedures, and performing complex chemical, biological, and cytological procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in project planning and development of research protocols to ensure adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with human assurance and the FDA.
  • Analyze results of research experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques, and develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis.
  • Compose articles for publication in scientific journals and review articles prepared by others.
  • Participate in physical examination, testing, and/or treatment of study patients for research purposes, and document study-specific procedures and outcomes in study patients' medical records.
  • Advise principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.
  • Perform administrative duties such as ordering equipment and supplies, and maintain equipment schedules, records, and cleanliness.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants, and other employees engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
  • Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical, and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histological, and cell culture procedures.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate electron microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment, and instruct others in operation of equipment.
  • Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature, summarize and evaluate findings, and develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or other natural, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area, and experience in research, basic science, or clinical laboratory, particularly clinical trial research. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience, including previous supervisory experience, may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Some previous experience with social/behavioral science (public health) research is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

You will need excellent customer service, interpersonal, multi-tasking, organizational, and verbal/written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and other computer software/databases, and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, keep accurate records, and make independent decisions.
