The Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund (AFREF) is on the lookout for a Media Relations Associate or Coordinator to enhance our media and communication initiatives that support our campaigns aimed at promoting robust consumer protections, addressing the challenges posed by private equity firms, and tackling the impacts of systemic racism.

AFREF has been instrumental in the enactment of significant financial reforms and the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We are committed to driving comprehensive changes in the financial landscape to foster economic, racial, and social justice. Our team collaborates with a diverse coalition of over 200 organizations, including consumer advocates, civil rights groups, labor unions, and academic experts.

The Media Relations Associate or Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Communications Director to execute AFREF's cohesive communication strategy, focusing on elevating the organization's visibility in the media and providing valuable insights to our policy and campaign teams. This role offers opportunities for increased responsibility for seasoned candidates, while those with less experience will have the chance to grow and refine their skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Track news developments in areas pertinent to AFREF's mission and share insights with relevant teams;
  • Draft and refine press releases, opinion pieces, and other public-facing documents; distribute them to media outlets and partner organizations;
  • Establish and nurture relationships with journalists covering AFREF-related topics and facilitate discussions between them and our policy and campaign teams;
  • Support the strengthening of AFREF's coalition by assisting partner organizations with their media outreach;
  • Create, manage, and review media contact lists;
  • Update the organization’s website to reflect our media engagement and prepare media summaries;
  • Contribute to special research initiatives and events as needed;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to implement an integrated communication strategy;
  • Assist the Communications Director in internal and external engagements with the AFREF coalition when necessary.

Compensation:

The annual salary for the Media Relations Associate ranges from $55,000 to $70,000, based on experience. For the Media Relations Coordinator, the salary range is $70,000 to $85,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and 401K.
