Position Overview

The Summer Camp Support Staff assists the Day Camp Activities Coordinator, Corps officers, and team members in the daily management of summer programs. This role involves supervising both indoor and outdoor activities for children, ensuring a safe and clean environment, preparing and implementing lesson plans for various activities, and participating in field trips and meal assistance as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate all Day Camp activities with enthusiasm in accordance with established training protocols and staff guidelines.
  • Implement positive behavior management strategies tailored for campers.
  • Complete communication forms to update parents and Corps Officers on camper-related issues, including injuries and behavioral challenges.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding child-related matters; report issues to the Day Camp Activities Coordinator without disclosing to unauthorized individuals.
  • Adhere to the dress code consistently; may be required to wear appropriate attire for activities.
  • Help maintain a clean and organized learning environment, including necessary housekeeping tasks.
  • Assist with check-in/check-out procedures, verifying the identity of individuals picking up campers against the authorized list.
  • Communicate respectfully with peers, supervisors, and participants from diverse backgrounds, addressing disputes professionally.
  • Enforce safety regulations specific to facilities and activities, ensuring only registered campers participate.
  • Maintain a safe working environment; report any facility issues or suspicious activities to the Corps Officer and Day Camp Activities Coordinator.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies and care for injured participants, volunteers, and staff, completing necessary documentation as directed.
  • Conduct regular head counts and maintain accurate attendance records for assigned children.
  • Assist in planning and executing activities, as well as supervising various activity stations with support from other staff.
  • Engage with children in group activities; assist with playground supervision and meal/snack preparation and service.
  • Follow and ensure compliance with The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and the Day Camp Code of Conduct.
  • Act as a mandated reporter for child and elder abuse, reporting any suspicions or inappropriate behavior to a supervisor immediately.
  • Recognize the spiritual needs of individuals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate a computer and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Preferred minimum age of 21 years.
  • Class C License and ability to drive preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work well and relate effectively with people.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Musical abilities are preferred.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and capable of learning new software with basic training.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Philosophy of education and child development consistent with that of The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, parents, and staff in leadership, counseling, and educational roles, including: relating joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages, applying appropriate discipline consistently, managing security and crisis situations calmly, providing constant supervision, and engaging children in activities.
