POSITION SUMMARY: The role of the Regulatory Compliance Coordinator for the Animal Care Project encompasses a range of responsibilities focused on ensuring the proper care and management of animals utilized in research. This position requires adherence to a structured work schedule, with regular hours from 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and occasional weekend duties from 7 am to 12 pm. The role is classified as essential, necessitating flexibility to work additional hours during emergencies or unforeseen circumstances until tasks are completed.


Key Responsibilities:

  • The Regulatory Compliance Coordinator (RCC) must possess comprehensive knowledge of federal regulations and policies governing the use of animals in research settings.
  • The RCC will serve as the primary point of contact between various stakeholders, including VSP, the IACUC, and the Animal Research Compliance Office (ARCO), facilitating operational support among these entities.
  • The RCC is responsible for the collection, organization, and dissemination of regulatory documentation in accordance with DoD regulations and local standard operating procedures (SOPs). Proficiency in word processing, database management, and spreadsheet operations is essential.
  • Responsibilities include conducting site visits to laboratories and animal housing facilities to verify compliance with IACUC-approved protocols, assisting staff and researchers in rectifying any deficiencies identified during inspections, and aiding in the preparation for compliance audits and site evaluations.
  • The RCC will also be involved in the development and annual revision of VSP SOPs, ensuring they remain current and effective.
  • Additional duties encompass the oversight of animal care and use data collection for mandated reporting, maintaining documentation related to testing parameters such as feed, water, and lighting, and supporting the post-approval monitoring (PAM) program.
  • Participation in IACUC inspections is required to ensure adherence to approved animal use activities, along with assisting staff in addressing any noted deficiencies.
  • Conducting reviews of animal use protocols and performing other duties as assigned by corporate and program management are also integral to this role.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, along with certification from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level. A Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) designation, coupled with three years of relevant experience in a comparable animal facility, is also desirable. Knowledge of federal regulations concerning animal research is essential, with experience in a DoD-supported animal care and use program being advantageous. The ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and exhibit strong interpersonal skills is crucial, as is the capacity to engage diplomatically with faculty and staff at all levels. Attention to detail, excellent organizational capabilities, and strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary for success in this position.
