POSITION SUMMARY: The role of a Veterinary Surgical Technician at SoBran encompasses a range of responsibilities critical to the care and management of research animals and the facilitation of surgical procedures. This position requires a commitment to excellence in animal care and surgical support, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide surgical assistance, including pre-operative and post-operative monitoring for both small and large animal surgeries, ensuring adherence to institutional guidelines and federal regulations.
  • Coordinate and manage surgical schedules for Principal Investigators (PIs), maintain accurate records of surgical monitoring, and provide immediate feedback to ensure compliance with best practices.
  • Conduct post-operative observations for various research animal species, including rodents and larger mammals, while supporting the overall surgical process.
  • Assist in maintaining high standards of sanitation and sterilization within surgical environments, ensuring the safety and well-being of all animals involved.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in veterinary medical terminology and animal nursing practices, providing support to veterinarians during examinations and procedures.
  • Monitor and document the health status of animals through regular clinical rounds and health assessments, maintaining comprehensive medical records.
  • Deliver training and technical guidance to veterinary and research staff, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable work environment.
  • Administer routine clinical treatments as directed, ensuring accurate dosage calculations and adherence to protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing training sessions to enhance technical skills and knowledge of standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of surgical and technical supplies, ensuring readiness for all surgical procedures.
  • Adhere to all safety and operational protocols, including the humane euthanasia of animals when necessary.
Qualifications:

A minimum of two years of experience in surgical technical roles is required, with a preference for candidates holding an A.S. or B.S. in Biology, Animal Sciences, or a related field. Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technician level or ALAT certification with a commitment to obtain LAT certification within one year of hire is essential. Candidates must meet all workplace access and security requirements as stipulated by SoBran.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform various physical tasks associated with animal care and surgical support.
