The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing military medicine. This position is within the Deployment Associated Infections Division, Operationally Relevant Infections Department at the Naval Medical Research Command, aimed at providing scientific assistance to the Immunology Branch. The Immunology Branch conducts research and develops preclinical enteric animal models to combat antimicrobial-resistant enteric infections, while also supporting various products under clinical evaluation.

As a member of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, the successful candidate will work closely under the guidance of principal investigators to develop, execute, and oversee research projects focused on interventions such as vaccines and immunoprophylactic products aimed at preventing diarrhea caused by bacterial enteropathogens, including ETEC, Campylobacter jejuni, EAEC, and Shigella spp. The candidate will explore the feasibility of applying a diverse range of immunological and microbiological principles to products in development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical expertise in immunology and preclinical mouse studies.
  • Lead and conduct enteric infection challenge studies in murine models.
  • Perform cellular and humoral immunology assays to evaluate responses to vaccination, infection, and product treatment in both animal and human specimens, including ELISA, ELISPOT, and multiparametric flow cytometry for T and B cells.
  • Develop innovative technologies and protocols, demonstrating independent judgment and expert knowledge in conducting preclinical and clinical studies.
  • Plan, process, and interpret experimental data; formulate hypotheses and design experimental protocols; analyze and interpret results.
  • Collect and manage samples, maintain detailed documentation, and ensure compliance with professional standards.
  • Engage and communicate with colleagues and collaborators, coordinating with technical and professional staff.
  • Assist in preparing data for presentations at scientific conferences and for publication in journals; write technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Contribute to new grant and funding applications.
  • May train and supervise technical staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor, including required training participation.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of relevant scientific areas; ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Familiarity with complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Capacity to work independently and supervise others.

Work Environment
  • This position primarily takes place in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree required.
  • 0-5 years of relevant experience preferred.

Some positions may require full COVID-19 vaccination. Proof of vaccination may be necessary.
Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include verification of references, previous employment, education, credentials, and a criminal background check. Any qualifications considered as equivalents to stated minimums require prior approval from the Chief Human Resources Officer.
