The City of Norfolk, VA is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the part-time School Crossing Guard position. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of school children at designated crossing sections at the beginning and end of each school day.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with children and possess excellent communication skills. As a School Crossing Guard, you will be responsible for signaling traffic to stop or proceed, communicating safety instructions to students, parents, and motorists, and providing safety and protection for school children, staff, parents, and buses.

Shift assignments are available Monday-Friday, with three shifts to choose from: 7:30 a.m., 8:10 a.m., and 8:45 a.m. Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave, as well as other benefits.

Applicants must have a minimum of six months continuous service to be eligible for these benefits. The hiring manager will use the supplemental questions to evaluate which applications will be given further consideration in the process.

Please briefly explain your work experience as a School Crossing Guard, your work experience in traffic control, and your professional and/or personal experience with children. You must also indicate your availability to work one of the shift assignments.

As a School Crossing Guard, you will be responsible for:

  • Signaling traffic to stop or proceed to allow for the safe crossing of children.
  • Communicating safety instructions and directions to students, parents, and motorists traveling through the school zone.
  • Assisting buses into and out of bus zones.
  • Providing safety and protection for school children, staff, parents, and buses.
