Job Overview

This position involves semi-skilled labor related to the upkeep and repair of transit vehicles and associated components.

Work is conducted under the supervision and guidance of a senior mechanic or supervisor.

Work Schedule

Shifts are from 4:30 PM to 1:00 AM, with designated days off on Sunday and Thursday.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct gasoline engine tune-ups and repairs.
  • Lubricate U-joints, steering components, and chassis.
  • Service transmissions and rear axles.
  • Remove and replace exhaust components such as mufflers and tailpipes.
  • Maintain brakes through removal, reconditioning, replacement, and adjustment.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed.
  • Assist as a Bus Mechanic's Helper or Bus Utility Worker when necessary.
  • Perform minor repairs on-site to return vehicles to service.
  • Handle repairs and replacements of engine components, brakes, pumps, cylinders, suspension, drive train, air conditioning, and electrical systems.
Requirements

Completion of work assignments may necessitate the operation of a vehicle.

Knowledge of tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance is essential, along with the ability to utilize these tools effectively.

Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety protocols is required.

Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals is crucial.

Applicants must provide their own hand tools as specified in the maintenance plan.

Physical capabilities include:

  • Climbing onto equipment for repairs, potentially up to 25 feet high.
  • Lifting, bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping, and twisting to manage vehicle components.
  • Tolerating exposure to fluids and solvents used in repairs.
  • Performing manual labor while standing on concrete surfaces.
  • Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 60 pounds independently.
  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of pressure with tools.
  • Pushing and pulling with up to 85 pounds of force.
  • Crawling into confined spaces as necessary.
  • Working in various weather conditions.
Qualifications

A high school diploma is required, along with at least one year of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.

A minimum of three years of unrestricted licensed driving experience is also necessary.

Applicants must be able to obtain a valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger endorsements within three months of hire.

Preferred qualifications include holding a valid Class A or Class B CDL with the necessary endorsements.

Employment offers are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, including drug screening, and a satisfactory criminal record check.

This role is safety-sensitive and requires compliance with drug and alcohol testing regulations.
