Senior Flight Test Engineer

Firestorm is at the forefront of innovation, addressing the critical question of how allied nations with limited defense budgets can effectively deter larger aggressor states. Our mission is to create a new paradigm in defense technology, which we refer to as "democratized deterrence." We are a venture capital-backed firm merging defense capabilities with cutting-edge technology to develop versatile aerial vehicles that empower operators.

We are in search of a Senior Flight Test Engineer who possesses a strong drive for innovation. This role will involve leading our flight test initiatives for our additively manufactured unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as we explore the full potential of modular UAV capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and participate in the developmental testing of autonomous aerial systems, utilizing both sub-scale and full-scale UAVs in a dynamic testing environment.
  • Design and implement flight test plans that thoroughly assess the functionalities of autonomous systems, including hardware and software integrations across diverse mission profiles.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including experts in autonomy, software, and hardware engineering, to establish testing requirements.
  • Provide essential feedback and insights that will influence the development of uncrewed aerial systems.
  • Continuously enhance testing procedures, safety standards, and documentation practices to maintain the integrity of all flight test operations.
  • Coordinate with both private and governmental testing facilities to evaluate systems and software.
  • Organize and manage test events, along with drafting and presenting comprehensive test reports.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, robotics, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience in autonomous systems testing.
  • One to five years of experience in flight testing, with a significant focus on autonomous or remotely piloted aerial systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute test plans for aerial systems under tight deadlines.
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals and deliverables.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey technical challenges and solutions to varied audiences.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel to various testing locations as required.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret-Level security clearance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license and capability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Physical ability to lift 25+ pounds as necessary.
  • Ability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including heat, cold, precipitation, and wind.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing, testing, and deploying autonomous systems within a defense or aerospace context.
  • Graduation from a test pilot school.
  • Hands-on experience with simulation environments and tools for testing autonomous systems.
  • Familiarity with software development practices and programming languages relevant to autonomy and robotics (e.g., Python, C++).
  • Knowledge of current industry and military standards concerning unmanned aerial systems and their operation within national airspace.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting test data, diagnosing system behaviors, and recommending actionable improvements.
  • FAA certification as a Remote Pilot (Part 107).
  • Ability to obtain FAA medical certification of third class or higher.
  • A strong desire and capability to thrive in a startup environment.
