Position Overview:

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist effectively evaluates and identifies limitations in a patient's capacity to engage in recreational and social activities within their daily routines. They create a tailored treatment strategy with patient-focused objectives aimed at enhancing recreational, social, emotional, physical, and communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts patient assessments by gathering medical history and performing relevant evaluations to collect data.
  2. Develops a personalized care plan and selects therapeutic methods to address specific challenges identified during the assessment and in accordance with physician directives.
  3. Implements ongoing evaluations of the patient and their progress in response to therapy.
  4. Initiates and oversees the discharge planning process from the initial visit, collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team throughout treatment.
  5. Supervises and assigns tasks to support staff and students in line with state regulations and departmental policies.
  6. Ensures thorough, accurate, and timely documentation in compliance with departmental policies and accreditation standards.
  7. Engages with the patient, family, caregivers, and healthcare team members to maximize the effectiveness of care.
  8. Identifies educational needs of the patient and their support system, providing necessary information to meet those needs.
  9. Participates in ongoing professional development through educational programs, including workshops and current literature review related to the field.
  10. Actively engages in quality improvement initiatives.
  11. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, adhering to established safety protocols.
  12. Operates within the scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
  13. Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation.
  • Current certification from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • BLS certification.
Preferred
  • One (1) year of clinical experience as a therapeutic recreation specialist.
