Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Building Permit Specialist to join our team at the City of Leesburg, FL. As a key member of our permitting and inspection team, you will be responsible for assisting citizens and contractors with the processes of applications, review, and approval for building permits and inspections, ensuring compliance with established City and State building safety codes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service to citizens and contractors, answering questions and resolving issues related to building permits and inspections.
  • Process permit applications, issue permits, and maintain accurate records in accordance with prevailing laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Receive and maintain all licensing certification and insurance information for contractors.
  • Determine permit requirements for each permit classification and applicable fees.
  • Correspond with contractors, engineers, and the general public on the permitting process.
  • Schedule daily building and fire inspections in coordination with building inspectors.
  • Gather information for entry into computer systems and extract information or reports as necessary.
  • Maintain files, extract and summarize information, and provide information to internal or external agencies as required.
  • Attend training seminars or classes to stay up-to-date on building codes and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum two years of general office and customer service experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to read and understand building codes and develop a working knowledge of State and local codes and laws for commercial, industrial, and residential building construction.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and Permitting/Plan Review/Inspection software.
