Position Overview

The role of the Senior Mechanical Engineer within the Project Engineering division involves the innovative design of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical products tailored for a variety of Aerospace clients and platforms. This includes, but is not limited to, reusable commercial launch vehicles, deep space exploration missions, military aircraft, and hypersonic systems.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is tasked with ensuring that all engineering outputs align with customer specifications, encompassing design, functionality, materials, and testing requirements as dictated by component and sub-tier specifications. Additionally, the engineer must adhere to established cost objectives set during the proposal phase. Collaboration with other engineering disciplines, manufacturing, and quality assurance is essential when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and ensure compliance with customer specifications and sub-level requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams beyond engineering as needed.
  • Document findings and communicate with the Contracts Administrator and Program Manager for customer transmission when applicable.
  • Oversee the design and performance of product components or major assemblies in accordance with customer requirements, including:
  • Designing electronic mechanical packaging suitable for high-reliability environments.
  • Conducting design analyses, including control systems, component stress, thermal assessments, and tolerance evaluations.
  • Coordinate the creation and verification of preliminary bills of materials within the business system.
  • Establish development testing requirements and create test instructions for development hardware and associated test equipment.
  • Provide detailed outlines for documentation control, including:
  • Test Procedures (DVT, ATP, QTP)
  • Verification Matrix aligned with specifications
  • Materials lists
  • Analysis Reports
  • Maintain vigilance regarding customer-driven changes, providing written notifications to the Contracts Administrator or Program Manager, including assessments of program impacts.
  • Offer engineering support (analysis/design/specifications) to other departments, subcontractors, and suppliers involved in the program.
  • Guide and prioritize tasks for designers and drafters.
  • Ensure the accuracy of all project drawings and documents, excluding purely drafting technique issues.
  • Manage Non-Conformance Report (NCR) activities and have authority to address discrepancies in hardware.
  • Prepare technical schedule items for Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR) and Critical Design Reviews (CDR).
  • Assist the Engineering Manager/Director or Program Manager in identifying required resources and project priorities.
  • Adhere to drawing release timelines.
  • Coordinate technical inputs and approvals of Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) items with Documentation Control.
  • Facilitate the provision of test instructions and drawings for development testing to Engineering Lab technicians in line with the program schedule.
  • Communicate any technical or scheduling issues to the Engineering Manager/Director, Contracts Administrator, and Program Manager promptly.
  • Conduct or coordinate all necessary analyses, both design-level and customer-required.
  • Lead internal design reviews and manage subsequent changes to drawings.
  • Incorporate feedback from customers and other disciplines into drawings efficiently and diplomatically.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • 3-10 years of relevant experience in a high-tech, electro-mechanical environment within the Aerospace and Military sectors, recognized as a subject matter expert in related products and technologies.
  • Familiarity with government procurement procedures, standards, and quality requirements.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with all organizational levels and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient in computer applications, particularly MS Office, with demonstrated experience in relevant systems and equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of fluid controls, control systems, structural or thermal analysis, and related software.
  • Significant experience in best practices for the development, production, and maintenance of these products and systems.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Complete special projects and miscellaneous assignments as needed.

Work Environment

  • This position involves exposure to conditions typical of a manufacturing or machine shop environment, including fluids, fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise, and vibration.
  • The role encompasses both a professional office setting and a manufacturing environment, utilizing standard office equipment and safety gear as required.
  • Some travel may be necessary for this position.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to see, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and to use hands for handling or feeling.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and move about the facility.
  • May need to lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds.
