Job Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to assume oversight for and participate in studies involving large animals as well as rodents. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biomedical engineering and a proven track record of conducting research of significant value in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research of significant value in the biomedical engineering field with a special focus towards peripheral nerve injury and repair.
- Perform professional and scientific research in the laboratory and advise the Principal Investigator (PI) on strategies to meet project goals and structure the research team.
- Develop research strategies for carrying out project objectives.
- Write abstracts, including developing an original research question, identifying relevant preliminary evidence and conceptual framework, overseeing data analysis, drawing conclusions, submitting to international scientific conferences, and presenting work if selected.
- Draft grant proposals, protocols, study materials, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts, and assist the PI with design, preparation, and submission of upcoming grant submissions and pilot projects.
- Supervise and manage a multi-disciplinary team, providing mentorship to junior technicians and graduate students.
- Perform large animal surgery and experimental management, especially in the setting of preclinical studies.
- Perform rodent surgery, particularly stereotactic injections and microsurgical techniques.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 5 to 7 years or Master of Science, Master of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Research project coordination or other relatable work experience.
- Proficiency in the commercialization process of medical products.
- Awareness of patent application and approval processes.
- Demonstrated ability with software and experience analyzing qualitative data.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Supervising and managing a multi-disciplinary team.
- Large animal surgery and experimental management, especially in the setting of preclinical studies.
- Rodent surgery, particularly stereotactic injections and microsurgical techniques.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to write IACUC protocols and navigate regulatory issues.
