Position Overview

A postdoctoral opportunity is available within the Division of Cardiology at UW Medicine, focusing on the investigation of mitochondria-containing extracellular vesicles (MitoEV) and their involvement in sterile inflammation linked to heart failure and type 2 diabetes.

Role and Responsibilities

This full-time position entails a 12-month commitment, with postdoctoral scholars represented by UAW 4121 under a collective bargaining agreement. The research aims to explore the immune-modulating functions of circulating MitoEV in chronic inflammatory conditions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Cell-Based Experimentation (50%):
    • Creation of gene-deletion monocyte lines utilizing CRISPR technology.
    • Conducting volume-metric flow analysis to measure MitoEV release.
    • Utilizing confocal and electron microscopy to examine subcellular structures.
    • Performing biochemical assays for functional and anatomical evaluation of mitochondria and lysosomes.
    • Assessing mitophagy and autophagy through live-cell imaging and flow analysis.
  • Development of Mouse Models (50%):
    • Generating and maintaining gene-knockout mouse lines.
    • Administering isolated MitoEV via venous injection.
    • Conducting small animal nuclear imaging to assess tissue targeting of MitoEV.
    • Analyzing tissue inflammation and performing echocardiograms to evaluate left ventricular function.
