Job Overview

The Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) operates autonomously while demonstrating sound judgment and discretion in an academic support capacity for the University. Responsibilities may include supervising students, evaluating academic submissions, organizing schedules, managing communications, and delivering lectures. The GSA is expected to work a maximum of 20 hours weekly throughout their contracted duration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Collaborate under the guidance of the Dean, Department Chair, or assigned Professor.
- Attend all essential departmental and Graduate School events.
- Participate in orientations and training sessions as directed by the department and The Graduate School.
- Adhere to the Community Standards and Honor Code as outlined by the Office of Community Life, along with the Graduate Assistantship Handbook.
- Create and modify PowerPoint, Excel, or Word documents as needed.
- Monitor attendance using Top-Hat and post updates in Canvas.
- Administer and supervise examinations, ensuring academic integrity by monitoring student behavior and managing relevant technologies.
- Evaluate both subjective and objective assessments within university deadlines.
- Communicate with students regarding attendance issues, meetings, and course-related inquiries via email and Canvas, adhering to university response timelines.
- Manage excused absences and accommodations as directed by the Office of Disability Accommodation Support.
- Maintain regular office hours to facilitate student interaction, either in person or through virtual platforms as instructed.
- Assist with various administrative tasks and projects as assigned.
- Uphold Liberty University policies, representing the institution with integrity.
- Collaborate effectively as a team member, promoting and supporting LU's mission.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

Supervisors of Graduate Assistants are responsible for adhering to the Graduate Assistantship Handbook and overseeing the Graduate Assistant's duties within their departments. This includes monitoring and evaluating the Graduate Assistant's academic, professional, social, and spiritual development. Supervisors will also conduct evaluations for new hires at the end of their first semester and for returning assistants at the conclusion of the academic year.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

A Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from an accredited institution is preferred. Minimum Requirement: Must be accepted into or currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program by the start date. Preferred: Enrollment in a master's or doctoral program with prior teaching experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Ability to understand and utilize all technical systems relevant to the GSA role. Residency in the local area is required for on-campus reporting.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Communication and Comprehension

Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey clear and articulate information. Proficiency in English for effective communication and correspondence. Public communication skills to represent Liberty University professionally to various stakeholders. Excellent organizational abilities. Competence in computer and scheduling tasks.

Problem Solving

Capable of reasoning, analyzing information, and applying judgment to resolve routine and complex issues.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

Ability to travel to local and campus locations as needed. May require sitting for desk work or typing on a keyboard. Regularly required to hear and speak for effective oral communication. Regularly required to stand, walk, and navigate stairs on campus. Ability to handle materials and perform tasks that may require bending or reaching. Regularly lift items weighing 10 pounds or less.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work Setting

The typical work environment for this position is a climate-controlled space that is well-lit with a moderate noise level. Occasional outdoor event facilitation may be required.

Driving Requirements

Use of personal or university vehicles may be necessary for travel related to job responsibilities. A valid Virginia driver's license, a satisfactory DMV record, and liability insurance are required.
