Position Overview:


The Aquatics Program Manager and Chief Coach role is essential in leading the SCRA Aquatics initiatives, a crucial position that directs both youth and adult development across recreational and competitive levels while emphasizing strong organizational and leadership skills in accordance with Stanford's standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all training sessions and competitions, tailoring workouts to suit participants' skill levels.
  • Develop comprehensive long-term and short-term training and competition strategies for all age groups and swimming abilities.
  • Assist in crafting and implementing retention strategies aimed at maintaining swimmer participation while assessing their needs and preferences within the team structure.
  • Manage the annual affiliation process with USA Swimming and oversee athlete registrations.
  • Provide administrative support, including documentation management and communication with parents and swimmers regarding practice schedules, registration requirements, and updates.
  • Encourage collaborative initiatives with other departments to enhance the overall program experience.
  • Conduct skill evaluations and closely track athletes' performance during practices and competitions, providing regular feedback to supervisors and parents.
  • Educate swimmers and their families on appropriate swimmer conduct, fostering a culture of respect and support within the team.
  • Manage pool facilities and organize club competitions and special events.
  • Collaborate on the enhancement of other aquatics programs and the promotion of new aquatic activities.
  • Supervise and coordinate all aquatic program activities, ensuring effective execution and organization.

Budget and Administrative Oversight (15%):

  • Assist in the planning and execution of the annual swim program calendar, incorporating practices, competitions, and special events.
  • Work with colleagues and management to navigate the budgeting process, address program challenges, interpret policies, and resolve complex issues.

Staff Development and Management (15%):

  • Provide mentorship and support to fellow coaches and staff members.
  • Lead training sessions for coaches and conduct program meetings as necessary.

Additional Responsibilities (10%):

  • Represent SCRA at various events, swim meets, and other functions.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned to support program objectives, facility requirements, and member expectations.
  • Act as a resource for other departments regarding youth and family programming.
  • Support pool operations.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in swim coaching.

Proven experience in managing club-based sports or organizing sport-related special events.

Coaching and/or competitive swimming experience at the club or collegiate level.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity and promotes belonging.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with effective communication abilities across diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of swimming development and its application in both recreational and competitive contexts.
  • Knowledge of risk management practices in swim programming.

  • Passion for continuous improvement and sharing best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in swim management software such as Meet and Team Manager.

Certifications and Licenses:
  • Current Lifeguard-BL Certification from the Red Cross or similar organization, or the ability to obtain it prior to the start date.
  • A minimum of four years as a USA Swimming coach member with all required training completed.
  • Online safety training for swim coaches and in-water certification.
  • Knowledge of USA Swimming rules and regulations.
  • ASCA coach level 1 certification or the ability to obtain it before the start date.

Physical Requirements:
  • Consistent requirement to stand while performing all listed tasks.
  • Intermittent requirement to reach forward to collect equipment, assist children, and manage pool covers.
  • Occasional requirement to climb to access pools of varying depths.
  • Must meet all physical requirements necessary to maintain the certifications listed above.
  • Frequent standing/walking, sitting, and light grasping/fine manipulation.
  • Ability to perform and instruct sports and fitness-specific skills.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily conducted outdoors at the pool deck.

Management of sports activities occurs at both indoor and outdoor facilities, with exposure to various weather conditions.

This is an in-person role, requiring availability on weekends and extended hours due to job demands.

This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is accountable for maintaining the integrity of Stanford's intercollegiate athletics program and the reputation of Stanford University.

The expected compensation for this role is between $66,560 and $80,000 annually.
