  • Position Overview:
  • The Senior Principal Product Engineer will take charge of leading engineering quotation initiatives across all product categories managed by the Digital Onboard Solutions Engineering (DOSE) team. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with Product Management, Program Management, and Commercial Operations teams to create offerings that deliver exceptional solutions, integrating advanced automation and data analytics within the rail sector. Furthermore, this role will emphasize engineering project coordination, focusing on evaluating engineering delivery against estimates to enhance future performance. The Senior Principal Product Engineer will also concentrate on engineering operations, tasked with assessing engineering efficiency, pinpointing improvement opportunities, and executing changes pertinent to the Product Engineering function. This position will support various products including GoLINC, ECP, Electronic Braking, Monitoring, Trainlink, LIG, OTA, EOA, among others.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage with product management to define the engineering efforts related to prospective commercial ventures and integrate these opportunities into the engineering workflow.
  • Oversee engineering estimations by collaborating with diverse engineering disciplines to gather inputs, consolidate project totals, and present the finalized estimate to product management for inclusion in the deal review summary.
  • Formulate timelines during the estimation phase.
  • Standardize quotations by analyzing common requests from the engineering department and developing reusable estimations to facilitate rapid turnaround for low-complexity opportunities.
  • Explore modularizing engineering estimations to devise unique solutions and accelerate the estimation process.
  • As proposal deadlines approach or are exceeded, collaborate with commercial and product teams to determine subsequent actions for the opportunity.
  • Anticipate resource requirements based on estimations and monitor the timing of estimations to ensure resource alignment.
  • Exhibit leadership capabilities by guiding and influencing key stakeholders to meet tender milestones.
  • Collaborate with external and internal Wabtec organizations, such as Trip Optimizer, Locotrol, locomotive services, transit, and other business units, to facilitate project quotations that span multiple product lines.
  • Represent DOSE to other internal Wabtec entities during the estimation process.
  • Act as a facilitator within the organization, bringing together stakeholders from various functions to work in unison.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, customer focus, safety, compliance, cost management, and scheduling.
  • Oversee program execution of the engineering team to ensure timely delivery, adherence to budget, and fulfillment of contractual obligations.
  • Identify dependencies for the Project Management Organization (PMO) and escalate any engineering-related obstacles.
  • Utilize a data-driven methodology to assess engineering headcount demand and capacity for the Product Engineering organization.
  • Monitor and evaluate engineering process performance indicators and governance metrics, implementing actions for continuous enhancement.
  • Drive compliance with operational tools and processes, including time tracking, engineering artifact generation, and repository management.
  • Provide leadership with updates on project and organizational status.
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in design, requirements development, and implementation involving Engineering Systems, Hardware/Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience with communication systems.
  • Familiarity with computer networking.
  • Experience in software deployment and configuration management.
  • Proven ability to operate in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Willingness and capability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Master's Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • Experience in Locomotive Systems Design.
  • Background in the Railroad Industry.
  • Prior experience in system design for large-scale software and electronics-based projects.
  • Experience in an Agile Development Environment.
  • Self-starter with the capability to lead design initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities.
  • Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards relevant to the rail industry.
