Job Summary

Meharry Medical College seeks a highly skilled and experienced Director of Development to join its Institutional Advancement team. This key role will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and securing major gifts in support of the College's strategic priorities and fundraising initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a portfolio of active donors and prospects, with a focus on securing annual, major, planned, and estate gifts.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts on behalf of the College.
  • Organize prospect visits efficiently and strategically, building relationships and securing gifts.
  • Record fundraising progress and communicate with stakeholders via briefings, cultivation and solicitation plans, and donor correspondence.
  • Meet with the Senior Director, Principal Gifts and Estate Planning, to discuss prospect assignments, portfolio reviews, and fundraising progress.
  • Request and utilize prospect research as needed.
  • Communicate with Advancement Operations staff regarding information updates to donor or prospect records.
  • Represent Institutional Advancement at internal education and outreach opportunities for Meharry faculty and staff.
  • Build and maintain an in-depth knowledge of Meharry, its funding priorities, and giving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations and other College departments to engage alumni and friends in meaningful ways.
  • Attend special events representing Institutional Advancement.
Requirements
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience in fundraising or equivalent, with experience in higher education preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience as a successful fundraiser in a complex and dynamic environment.
  • Previous capital campaign experience and/or experience cultivating, soliciting, and securing six-figure gifts and above.
  • Solid computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office applications, the internet, and social media.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and manage multiple projects.
  • Action-oriented and full of energy, with a focus on collaboration and teamwork.
  • Authentic appreciation for the role that Meharry Medical College plays as a premier medical college and a Historically Black College and University institution.
  • Upholds the Code of Ethical Standards and the Donors Bill of Rights as outlined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
  • Frequent travel and some evening/weekend work required.
