Position Overview

This position is available within the FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Program Technician - Distributed Energy Resources (DER) plays a crucial role in managing the DER interconnection processes for the company's Distribution function.

The preferred work locations include the Greensburg Corporate Office or the Erie Service Center, though other locations within FirstEnergy Pennsylvania may also be considered.


Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety in all work activities.
  • Oversee interconnection mailboxes, including generating queue numbers for retail net metering applications, addressing customer inquiries, processing application checks, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Evaluate and process Level 1 & 2 retail net metering interconnection applications, including:
  • Reviewing applications for completeness and accuracy.
  • Conducting technical assessments of customer generators to ensure compliance with FirstEnergy standards.
  • Creating work requests and collaborating with the design team for necessary upgrades related to interconnections.
  • Maintaining organized records of correspondence and application documents in the database.
  • Providing timely responses to customer inquiries.
  • Supporting Project Managers and Planning Engineers with Level 2, 3, and 4 retail interconnection applications.
  • Participating in PJM kickoff calls for wholesale interconnection projects.
  • Compiling data from the interconnection database for regulatory reporting to the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC).
  • Assisting during emergencies and storm-related activities, including travel to various locations as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology or a related field, with 0 to 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of 3 years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree, encompassing knowledge of the DER process, work planning, construction, and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to understand and apply:
  • National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Company safety protocols and operational manuals.
  • Legal and regulatory standards as applicable.
  • Technical knowledge of equipment and electrical systems.
  • Construction and maintenance methodologies.
  • Procurement processes for materials and tools.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, SAP, GIS applications, and CAD software.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with engineers, management, customers, and contractors.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and schematics to develop accurate work plans.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for commuting to various facilities.
