Job Summary

As Associate Vice President of Technology Services, you will be responsible for overseeing the strategic planning and project lifecycle of core business systems, including the student information system, student portal, database services, HR, finance, advancement, and related solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Strategic Planning: Lead and guide the professional services functions within the University's Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, which consists of enterprise technology project management, enterprise architecture, solutions development, and campus partnerships.
  • Project Management: Responsible for the strategic planning and project lifecycle of core business systems, including the student information system, student portal, database services, HR, finance, advancement, and related solutions.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Foster and maintain strong collaboration between ITS and campus technology users. Promote a culture of innovation and collaboration to apply technology solutions and enhance technology functionality to meet institutional needs.
  • Technology Architecture: Collaborate with others in the planning of major university systems architecture, including applications, data, and infrastructure architectures.
  • Project Management Office (PMO): Lead and guide the IT Project Management Office (PMO). Ensure that the PMO approach aligns with the University's strategic priorities, along with involving internal ITS groups and external client groups properly in project design and implementation.
  • Enterprise Technology Strategy: Participate in the development and deployment of the overall enterprise technology strategy. Takes part in IT strategy execution, including IT resource portfolio planning and management activities.
  • Governance and Compliance: Contribute to and support ITS governance activities, including participating in the executive committee and relevant subcommittees.
  • Technology Recommendations: Recommend enterprise system integrations and technologies that will enhance existing systems.
  • Team Management: Foster a cooperative work environment that enables team members to develop professionally, respects diversity, promotes teamwork and collaboration, along with emphasizing quality, customer satisfaction, innovation, and cost efficiency.
  • Reporting and Communication: Provide regular status reports to VP/CIO and other senior management.
  • Professional Development: Participate in University-wide committees, work with external vendors to evaluate products, technologies, and services, and participate in professional organizations and present at professional organization conferences/meetings.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline with an IT focus is preferred. A graduate degree in business, education, or management is preferred. A minimum 10 years of experience in systems development, systems architecture and methodologies or related experience with a minimum of 5 years building full life cycle applications OR, minimum 5 years' experience in a senior architect role, OR, minimum 5 years' experience in business process re-engineering or process improvement involving broad-based information systems.
  • Qualifications: Excellent communication (verbal, written, presentation), interpersonal and consultative skills to work effectively with vendors, clients, peers, and ITS management and staff. Core consulting skills such as business writing and presenting, and analytic comparisons. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to understand and apply concepts such as resource utilization, work effort, percent to complete and project health.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Great attitude and strong work ethic; Ability to work independently and in team settings; Focuses on solving conflict, not blaming; Maintains confidentiality and follows ITS and other university policies regarding data security and protection; Balances team and individual responsibilities; Contributes to building a positive team spirit; Effectively influences actions and opinions of others; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; Shares expertise with others; Able to communicate technical ideas and concepts to non-technical audiences; Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Ability to lead teams on short and long-term initiatives. Direct report ownership of 15-25 staff members, 3-6 direct reports. Additional project consultants and student workers as required by project/workload.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certifications: Applicable certifications preferred. Familiarity with the Project Management Institute's project management life cycle and PMBOK, PMP highly preferred.
  • Computer Skills: An advanced understanding of the process of creating enterprise IT systems, including different options and design methods for system and application software development in environments with multiple platforms. Demonstrated ability to interpret technology and market trends as a foundation for technology and product roadmaps. Exemplary general IT knowledge (applications development, testing, deployment, operations, documentation, standards, best practices, security, hardware, networking, OS, DBMS, middleware, etc.). Should have specific knowledge of some of the following technical areas: web services architecture, business process re-engineering, SOA and agile design and development, relational database design and data analysis, business intelligence tools, system testing standards compliance and benchmarking experience.
