Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Specialist to join our team at Shelby County. As a key member of our transportation team, you will be responsible for coordinating and executing the safe and secure transportation of inmates, employees, and materials between various locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Transport inmates safely and securely via passenger vehicles, buses, and vans to various locations, including courts, medical centers, and other specified locations.
  • Assist in maintaining security and order in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inmate accountability throughout the shift, physically accounting for the whereabouts of inmates at all times and logging this information in the appropriate logs.
  • Monitor activities and behavior of inmates during transport and/or while in custody, maintaining discipline and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals involved.
  • Conduct regular inspections of transport vehicles and equipment, reporting any damage or issues to supervisors.
  • Prepare and complete reports, including progress reports, disciplinary reports, and accident reports.
  • Ensure the cleaning and sanitizing of all transport vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed.
Requirements
  • Four (4) years' experience in a law enforcement capacity, such as Police, Sheriff's Deputy, Highway Patrol, etc., with a good standing or retired status.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduate from a law enforcement academy (POST Certification Academy).
  • Must have Law Enforcement Academy POST Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain a Tennessee Handgun Permit.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or Class B with air brake endorsement or Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) preferred but not required.
  • Must pass NCIC background check.
  • Will be required to pass a drug test and a TB screening.
  • Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and be on call.

This position is subject to a background check for any convictions that have a substantial relationship to potential job duties. Only convictions that are substantially related to potential job duties will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate.

This position requires the ability to work in a prison environment and to function in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
