Job Summary

Shelby County is seeking a highly skilled Transportation Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for coordinating transportation and movement operations necessary to transport employees, inmates, documentation, and/or materials between various locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport inmates safely via passenger vehicles, buses, and vans to various locations, ensuring the safety and security of the inmates and employees.
  • Assist in maintaining security and order in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inmate accountability throughout the shift, physically accounting for the whereabouts of inmates at all times and logging this information in the appropriate logs.
  • Monitor activities and behavior of inmates during transport and/or while in custody, maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe environment.
  • Make periodic unscheduled patrols of the areas, holding/staging areas, and escorts in a safe manner.
  • Inspect each transport vehicle and/or individuals for contraband, conducting a Tek-84 screening, frisk/pat search, and removing all items from the individual's pockets prior to transport.
  • Acquire and maintain working knowledge of radio, computers, and other electronic equipment.
  • Prepare and complete reports, such as progress reports, disciplinary and accident reports.
  • Prepare, maintain, and review various reports and documentation, such as booking documents, transport logs, etc.
  • Report damaged or missing equipment/inventory to supervisors and monitor vehicle/equipment and report repair needs.
  • Ensure the cleaning and sanitizing of all transport vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensure each inmate's name appears on the transport docket paperwork before any transport commences.
  • Complete USMS Trip sheet and paperwork for all USMS transports.
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years' experience in a law enforcement capacity, such as Police, Sheriff's Deputy, Highway Patrol, etc., and must have left in good standing or retired.
  • High school diploma or possess a GED.
  • Graduate from a law enforcement academy (Post Certification Academy).
  • Proof of education, training, and/or experience is required.
  • Must have Law Enforcement Academy POST (Police Officer Standards of Training) Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain a Tennessee Handgun Permit.
  • Must be able to function in a prison environment.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or Class B with air brake endorsement or Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) preferred but not required.
  • Must pass NCIC background check.
  • Will be required to pass a drug test and a TB screening.
  • Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and be on call.
