The salary of the selected candidate will be determined based on various factors, including departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Overview


Columbia University is in the process of developing a new campus in the Manhattanville area of West Harlem, which has been shaped by extensive community engagement through numerous meetings with stakeholders.

This new campus aims to address the University's need for additional facilities while offering vibrant ground floor retail spaces, open areas, and improved access to the waterfront.


The development plan encompasses approximately 6.8 million square feet of new construction across 17 acres, extending from West 125th Street to 133rd Street and from Broadway to Twelfth Avenue.

It also includes properties on the east side of Broadway from West 131st Street to 134th Street.

As the project moves towards the formal rezoning process, Columbia is assembling its Manhattanville team and is seeking a Vice President to provide technical guidance and lead a team of specialists across various disciplines.

Key Responsibilities


The Vice President will collaborate closely with the Deputy Vice President of Manhattanville Development and the Executive Team to establish policies, programs, budgets, and procedures for managing the technical components of each phase of the construction process.


In partnership with the Deputy Vice President and other project leaders, the Vice President will review and endorse the selection of external technical teams.


The ideal candidate will coordinate with consultants to prepare detailed drawings and specifications for mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and other critical systems for the various Manhattanville projects.

Additionally, they will lead a professional group focused on construction mitigation related to noise, air quality, traffic, and more, providing technical expertise across multiple projects and serving as the technical authority for the Manhattanville team.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required.


At least fifteen years of experience in the construction of complex institutional or commercial properties, with a focus on mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or other major building systems.


The candidate should be a collaborative team player capable of becoming the technical expert within the development team.

Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and strong work ethic are essential. Experience in contract negotiations and a solid understanding of construction law and processes in New York City are crucial.


A proven track record of meeting budgets and schedules, along with excellent project management skills, is required. The candidate should possess an innovative mindset for problem-solving and a strong ability to communicate effectively at all levels.


Commitment to sustainability goals and the ability to integrate sustainable building practices are important.


Dedication to achieving goals related to minority, women, and locally owned business enterprises is also essential.

Preferred Qualifications

A Professional Engineering license is preferred.

A Master's degree is a plus.

Familiarity with various USGBC LEED rating systems; being a LEED accredited professional is advantageous.
