Position Overview

Columbia University is in the process of developing a new campus in the Manhattanville area of West Harlem, which has been shaped by extensive engagement with community members, students, faculty, and civic organizations. This new campus aims to address the University's need for additional space while offering vibrant ground floor retail opportunities, public spaces, and improved access to the waterfront.

The development area encompasses approximately 6.8 million square feet of new construction across 17 acres, extending from West 125th Street to 133rd Street and from Broadway to Twelfth Avenue. It also includes properties on the east side of Broadway from West 131st Street to 134th Street. As the project moves towards the formal rezoning process, Columbia is assembling its Manhattanville team and is seeking a Vice President of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to provide specialized knowledge and lead a team of technical experts across various disciplines. Key technical aspects of the project include major building systems, a central energy facility, construction mitigation, and technology integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Vice President will collaborate closely with the Deputy Vice President of Manhattanville Development and the Executive Team to formulate policies, programs, budgets, and procedures for managing the technical components of each construction phase.
  • In partnership with the Deputy Vice President of Manhattanville Development, the Vice President will review and endorse the selection of external technical teams.
  • The successful candidate will facilitate the coordination of consultants in creating drawings and specifications for mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and other significant systems design for various Manhattanville projects.
  • This role will lead a professional group of construction mitigation specialists addressing noise, air quality, traffic, and other concerns, providing technical guidance across multiple projects and serving as the technical expert for the Manhattanville team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required.
  • A minimum of fifteen years of experience in constructing complex institutional or commercial properties with a developer, construction manager, general contractor, subcontractor, or similar organization, with specialization in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or other major building systems.
  • A collaborative team player capable of integrating into a professional development team and evolving into the technical specialist of that group.
  • High integrity, professionalism, and work ethic, along with experience in contract negotiations and a strong understanding of construction law and processes in New York City.
  • A proven track record of meeting budgets and schedules, along with excellent project management skills and innovative problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong administrative and cost control skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing. Awareness of the University’s sustainability goals and knowledge of how to incorporate sustainable building practices.
  • Commitment to achieving goals related to minority, women, and locally owned business enterprises.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Professional Engineering license is preferred.
  • A master's degree is a plus.
  • Familiarity with various USGBC LEED rating systems; being a LEED accredited professional is advantageous.
