Job Summary
The Animal Care Technician will perform routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraining, and transporting of laboratory animals. This will include nonhuman primates, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to all local, state, federal, and company regulations, guidelines, and policies.
- Maintain and sanitize animal facilities and ensure adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment.
- Observe and report animal behavior and conditions.
- Collect specimens and provide technical assistance to research and veterinary personnel as instructed.
- Participate in environmental enrichment programs as per departmental standard operating procedures.
Requirements
- High School diploma and 3 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) highly desired.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must have the ability to work with nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species without jeopardizing the health status of the animals.
Working Conditions
Employees in this position will participate in an occupational safety and health program which requires tuberculin testing and potentially immunization. Weekend work, holiday work, and overtime hours are a requirement of this position. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster.
