Individual Student Support Specialist

Somerset County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated individual to provide personalized support to a student in a one-on-one capacity. This role encompasses a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week, structured as 7 hours each day. Positions are available at both elementary and secondary educational levels.
The primary responsibility of the specialist will be to assist one specific student, although there may be opportunities to work with small groups when necessary. The specialist will engage the student in various educational activities and assignments while also managing behavioral challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating with teachers to plan daily lessons and instructional strategies.
- Monitoring and discussing the student's academic progress with the teaching staff.
- Reinforcing classroom instruction and maintaining a structured learning environment.
- Acting as a positive role model, providing encouragement and support to students.
- Implementing interventions as required within the instructional framework.
- Participating in program planning meetings and discussions regarding student progress.
- Utilizing technology effectively as part of instructional support.
- Adhering to behavior management protocols under the guidance of the assigned teacher.
- Executing activities outlined in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Assisting students with essential life skills, including personal care as needed.
- Attending staff meetings and contributing to committee work as necessary.
To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- A High School Diploma is required, along with either 48 college credits or a passing score on the Paraprofessional Test. An Associate's degree or higher is preferred.
- Previous experience or training in child care is advantageous.
- Strong language skills to read, analyze, and interpret educational materials, as well as to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
- Basic arithmetic skills and a solid understanding of the subject matter being taught.
- Ability to solve practical problems and adapt to various situations.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and internet-based educational tools.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to motivate students from diverse backgrounds.
- A passion for working with young children and understanding their unique challenges.
This position requires the ability to meet physical demands, including lifting and moving students as necessary. The work environment is typically moderate in noise level, with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts.
