Position Summary

The Principal Engineer - Advanced Trainer at Okuma America Corporation plays a pivotal role in the exploration, research, and evaluation of innovative technologies, unique field situations, and troubleshooting methodologies. This position also entails the creation of pertinent documentation aimed at enhancing the knowledge database and developing training content to facilitate knowledge transfer across various organizational levels, distribution networks, and end users through structured instructor-led training sessions, virtual courses, mentorship programs, and apprenticeships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide mentorship and support to diverse technical teams within the organization.
  • Oversee the development of new service product solutions that align with evolving technologies.
  • Collaborate with Japanese advisors to obtain and revise product technical documentation.
  • Create training materials that address new technologies and field insights derived from site assessments.
  • Design and develop training resources tailored to the needs of Okuma members, distributors, and end users, including manuals, procedures, videos, reference documents, knowledge base articles, and presentations.
  • Revise existing training documentation in response to updates regarding specifications, safety protocols, etc.
  • Support and evaluate the preparation of training and assessment materials created by our educational partners in support of the Okuma Machine Tool Academy.
  • Offer guidance to team members during business trips to promote knowledge sharing and enhance understanding of mechanical/electrical training opportunities.
  • Develop new training course curricula for emerging technological advancements or training needs related to mechanical and/or electrical competencies in customer service.
  • Comply with all company employment policies and safety regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned and seek opportunities to add value.

Qualifications

Experience/Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent in Math and Science.
  • Licensure or certification in Electromechanical training.
  • Technical training from a Trade School.
  • Associate's Degree in a Technical Field.

Skills and Abilities

General:
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Capable of working independently or collaboratively within a team.
  • Adaptability to a fast-paced production environment.
  • Proficient in basic PC applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred:
  • Proficient technical writing skills.
  • Strong familiarity with Adobe, InDesign, or similar software.
  • Experience with audiovisual equipment.
  • Demonstrated video editing skills.

Technical:
  • Fundamental mechanical/electrical skills.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and electrical schematics is a plus.
  • Basic proficiency with hand tools and various electrical and mechanical devices, including precision measuring equipment, multimeters, oscilloscopes, cranes, and forklifts.
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities.

Communication:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with exceptional listening abilities.
  • Ability to articulate effectively in a business context.
  • Proficient in asking pertinent questions.

Mathematical and Analytical Skills:
  • Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Capability to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously and willing to adapt to changes while taking initiative.

Physical and Environmental Considerations

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for a quarter of the work shift and stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for three-quarters of the work shift.
  • Capability to lift and carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, and reach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and audibly.
  • Visual acuity to perform all work-related tasks (clear or corrected vision at 20 inches or less).
  • Frequent finger dexterity for operating phones, computers, electronic equipment, and tools.

Work Environment:
  • Approximately half of the role's responsibilities are conducted in an office setting with standard equipment and moderate noise levels.
  • The other half of the responsibilities occur at customer sites, distributor locations, or within Okuma facilities, often interacting with production and warehouse environments, which may expose the employee to varying temperatures and noise levels.

Special Requirements:
  • Maintain annual OSHA safety certifications as required by job responsibilities.
  • Frequent travel (up to 75%) is required after onboarding.
