Internal Auditor I Job Description

Pima County Government is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Internal Auditor I to join our team. As an Internal Auditor, you will play a crucial role in evaluating the County's processes and procedures to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in conducting internal audits and projects by gathering and analyzing financial data and performing preliminary surveys and risk analyses;
  • Assist in defining audit objectives and scope, and assist in developing the audit program;
  • Prepare reports of audit results and recommendations;
  • Attend meetings with operating personnel to review results and prepare draft sections of the audit report;
  • Participate in preparing and presenting the summarized audit results, issues, and impact of deficiencies to management;
  • Assist in developing and presenting reports of observations with recommendations for needed corrections or other management attention;
  • Participate in performing follow-up audits on corrective actions as assigned by management;
  • Identify whether the organization has adhered to specific compliance requirements and report observations and recommendations to appropriate management;
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of information encountered or created in the course of assigned duties;
  • Conduct and document interviews of clients or other County employees to develop additional information to enhance analyses of critical information;
  • Review automated systems to determine whether adequate internal controls exist and which identify areas requiring management's attention.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in accounting, finance, public or business administration or closely related field;
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques for data-collection, audit methods, report writing and data analyses;
  • Knowledge of techniques of public-sector financial management and governmental accounting, to include Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP);
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of advanced mathematics and statistical analyses;
  • Knowledge of organization and functional areas and responsibilities of Pima County Government departments and agencies;
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations and guidance for the administration of contracts, grants and bonds;
  • Knowledge of County financial reporting systems and relevant computer-based resources for the management and reporting of critical financial information;
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective interviewing;
  • Skills in developing, implementing and documenting audit activities;
  • Skills in documenting work processes and control procedures;
  • Skills in collecting and analyzing financial and operational data from manual and computer-based records and resources to determine compliance with standards;
  • Skills in interviewing clients and other County staff to develop additional information to enhance analyses of critical information;
  • Skills in writing analytical reports with adequate supporting materials for management consideration;
  • Skills in using computer-based resources to collect, analyze and report data, findings and recommendations;
  • Skills in balancing multiple assignments and priorities in a time-/cost-effective manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance;
  • Experience in cash handling, accounts payable, or accounts receivable;
  • Public speaking and/or presentation experience in an academic or professional setting;
  • Experience working effectively on a team while demonstrating excellent customer service skills;
  • Experience with creating/modifying spreadsheets and/or extracting information from databases;
  • Experience receiving and providing feedback regarding written documents in an academic or professional setting.
