About the Role

Checkr is seeking a highly experienced and strategic VP of Legal to lead its commercial and corporate legal team. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role will primarily be responsible for providing expert advice and support on all customer, channel, and strategic partner deals. You will also provide guidance on corporate transactions, including public company readiness, M&A, and other strategic transactions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commercial Contract Management: Structure, review, draft, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including customer sales agreements, commercial partnership agreements, and services agreements.
  • Contract Template Development: Develop, improve, and maintain contract templates, standard forms, corporate policies, and processes.
  • Process Improvement: Build and manage processes, workflows, and trainings that can scale to keep up with Checkr's fast growth.
  • Corporate Transactional Support: Advise and provide support on corporate transactional work, as well as assisting with the management of external counsel.
  • Corporate Governance: Provide advice on corporate governance best practices, including assistance on general board and shareholder matters, the formation of corporate governance policies, securities filings, and coordination of stock or equity issuance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Contribute to cross-functional teams as a trusted advisor, creative problem-solver, and strategic thinker.
Requirements
  • JD Degree and California Bar Membership: JD degree and a member in good standing of the California Bar.
  • Commercial and Corporate Experience: 15+ years of relevant commercial and corporate experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role in-house in a high-growth technology company.
  • Contract Negotiation Expertise: Top-notch expertise in structuring, drafting, and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts.
  • Strategic Thinking: Pragmatic strategist who can identify and resolve legal issues in the context of the company's goals and risk thresholds.
  • Team Leadership: Demonstrated ability to scale a commercial legal team in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
