Environmental Scientist

Under the direction of the Section 106 Coordination Branch Chief, and with input from the Statewide Collections Coordinator and the Native American Cultural Studies (NACS) Chief in the Cultural Studies Office (CSO), the incumbent employs scientific and regulatory expertise in pre-contact archaeology, archaeological collections and curation management, and Native American coordination and consultation to develop statewide policy and implement initiatives to aid district and headquarters staff in cultural resource compliance and environmental analysis.
Key Responsibilities- Review technical cultural resources reports for scientific rigor and statewide consistency with the Section 106 Programmatic Agreement and the PRC 5024 Memorandum of Understanding.
- Carry out a wide variety of scientific studies and environmental planning activities designed to support the department's missions and to satisfy state and federal historic preservation and repatriation laws and regulations as applied to transportation projects and programs.
- Work closely with the NACS Chief and the Statewide Collections Coordinator, as well as other Environmental Planners, Senior Environmental Planners, and other environmental staff.
- Provide direct assistance to other units, reviews or assists in creation of environmental compliance documents, provides guidance to the regions and districts on environmental analysis and compliance issues, develops manuals and guidance, conducts training, and may serve in a lead capacity over other Caltrans staff or student assistants.
- Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
- Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment.

Employees may also participate in the Third-Party Pre-Tax Parking Reimbursement Account Program, which allows employees to deduct a specific pre-tax amount for work-related parking fees from their pay.
Finally, employees may participate in the Vision Benefits program, which offers employees and their dependents an annual eye examination and an allowance for frames and lenses.
