Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Chief of the Biological Science and Innovation Office, the incumbent coordinates and negotiates with districts and state and federal environmental agencies regarding wildlife species and protected animal species; provides guidance, direction, and expertise on endangered species regulations; assists district environmental units in determining appropriate and cost-effective aquatic and terrestrial connectivity remediation measures; coordinates the statewide assessment and identification of wildlife connectivity barriers on the State Highway System; guides and negotiates project approvals and permits related to biological resources; acts as an in-house expert on the most difficult and complex wildlife and endangered species management and assessment issues. The incumbent will serve as an advisor and technical backup to the Chief.

Responsibilities
  • Review and assimilate science and data from various sources to make objective recommendations for wildlife connectivity barrier remediation projects.
  • Mentor district environmental staff toward successful project implementation of the best available science.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the ability to present complex biological information in a public meeting forum and to promote collaboration with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Apply scientific methodologies to principles, review and check scientific and environmental documents, and establish and maintain project/program priorities.

Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and assimilating science and data from various sources to make objective recommendations for wildlife connectivity barrier remediation projects and mentoring district environmental staff toward successful project implementation of the best available science.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the ability to present complex biological information in a public meeting forum and to promote collaboration with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated thorough working knowledge of project development processes and organizational relationships, policies, financial constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply scientific methodologies to principles, review and check scientific and environmental documents, and establish and maintain project/program priorities.
