Optical Systems Engineer for Space Surveillance

Key Responsibilities:

As a vital member of the Space Surveillance Research and Development (R&D) team, you will contribute to Slingshot Aerospace's mission to enhance the security, safety, and sustainability of outer space. Your role will involve the innovative design and development of optical systems aimed at detecting resident space objects (RSOs) across various orbital ranges.

Position Duties
  • Align all tasks with Slingshot's core values and objectives.
  • Conduct system-level design and integration of advanced hardware to create pioneering optical surveillance systems.
  • Develop algorithms and software to automate and optimize the processes of optical sensor data tasking, collection, processing, and dissemination.
  • Assist in the transition of Slingshot's products and services to the Slingshot Global Sensor Network (SGSN) and other operational technology platforms.
  • Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to ensure the successful fulfillment of mission-critical requirements.
  • Share your expertise and insights to influence product development and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentation materials.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as needed (limited to less than 10% of overall duties).
Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship is required, with eligibility for government security clearances.
Essential Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics (Optics), Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience or a strong academic background complemented by internship experience.
  • Proficiency in developing applications using Python and/or C++.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technological concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to travel up to 5% of the time to support sensor installations.
  • A determined approach to overcoming challenges and delivering high-quality solutions.
Desirable Skills
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics (Optics), Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in developing and debugging applications in Python and/or C++, particularly in a Linux environment.
  • Background in optics or mechanical system design and assembly.
  • Training or experience in areas such as image processing, algorithm optimization, software/hardware interfacing, embedded/GPU development, astrodynamics, estimation theory, statistical analysis, remote sensing, radiometry, and machine learning.
  • Experience in early-stage startup environments.
