Sterile Processing Technician Job Description

Island Health is seeking a highly skilled Sterile Processing Technician to join our Surgical Services team.

Job Purpose:

The successful candidate will be responsible for decontaminating equipment, assisting with inventory control, and restocking supplies and equipment on carts used in various hospital departments.

Duties:
  • Distribute medical surgical reprocessed instruments to clinical areas as needed.
  • Clean, package, and process various trays and instruments.
  • Assist in inventory control by maintaining adequate inventory of stock to ensure continuous patient care.
  • Operate steam autoclaves and washer sterilizer and maintain daily control records to ensure proper sterilization.
  • Clean shelves, cupboards, autoclaves, sinks, and counters according to written procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating new products.
  • Respond to cardiac arrests and assist in procuring supplies as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining records specific to the department.
  • Accept responsibility for knowing current hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to operate necessary equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform in a calm and proficient manner in an emergency situation.
  • Perform in a manner that demonstrates technical skills related to each respective area; decontamination, packaging, and processing, sterilization.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to utilize good aseptic technique and infection control practices.
  • Accept, support, and implement hospital and departmental policies and programs, enhancing the development of same by making recommendations for change.
  • Order and receive supplies from the Materials Management Department.
  • Affix charge stickers to all patient charge items.
  • Issue certain medical surgical supplies in small quantities to outpatients.
  • Communicate pertinent information regarding problems in department operation to the supervisor.
  • Respond in a constructive and sensitive manner to verbal and non-verbal behavior of peers, physicians, patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel.
  • Demonstrate support of hospital and department philosophy.
  • Accept responsibility for keeping current with Central Service practice.
  • Attend workshops and in-services that meet individual needs in area of skill development.
  • Serve on hospital committees as elected and/or appointed.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings.
  • Participate in sharing of knowledge and expertise through in-service and in orientation of new personnel.
  • Plan and coordinate work flow to allow time for in-service, meetings, and conferences.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationship among staff and between other departments and disciplines.
  • Accept constructive criticism and take action to improve.
  • Respect patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain security of hospital property.
  • Maintain a suitable environment of cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to interact positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, co-workers, subordinates, patients, and visitors.
  • Must meet regular attendance standard and must stay at or below average sick leave utilization levels.
Requirements:
  • On-the-job or formal training as a central service technician over 30 days or up to 3 months.
Work Environment:

The work of this position is performed inside, exposing the employee to indoor environmental conditions, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The employee may be exposed to dust, pollens, pollutants, fumes, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:

While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time; push, pull, and reach; occasionally bend, sit, stoop, and stretch. The employee will need full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients, should have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and medical equipment. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports are required; specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
