Data Science Expert for Navigation Systems

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Scientist to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a key member of our Navigation group, you will play a critical role in developing data science solutions to support the US Navy's navigation systems.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to design and implement data collection, processing, and analysis efforts to assess the performance of navigation systems for various US Navy platforms.
- Provide technical direction and leadership to navigation subject matter experts on the use of data science techniques for answering critical questions and solving technical challenges with navigation systems.
- Develop models and simulations to describe data, predict events, and prescribe a course of action that directly reflect stakeholder needs.
- Acquire domain knowledge in the field of maritime navigation and use that insight to build forward-thinking analytical solutions to test and evaluate prototype and operational navigation systems.
- Circulate knowledge by articulating ideas clearly through effective visualizations, papers, and presentations to technical staff, management, and government decision makers.
- Masters or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, and 5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated track record of excellence in technical leadership or project management from concept development through execution and close out.
- Experience developing AI/ML algorithms and/or translating mathematical concepts using efficient and well-documented code.
- Strong proficiency in developing analytical pipelines, data science applications, and dashboard tools, and statistical and machine learning methodologies for specific quantitative goals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to articulate complex technical issues for a wide range of audiences.
- Interest in learning about maritime navigation systems.
- Experience with Python and/or MATLAB.
- Experience with using version control software, such as Git.
- Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
- Knowledge of MLOps, Agile, and DevOps processes.
- Experience designing and implementing AI/ML algorithms for time series data.
- Demonstrated understanding of US Navy surface and subsurface navigation concepts.
- Familiarity with US Navy Strategic Systems Programs technical and programmatic processes.
- Experience in writing technical proposals or other forms of business development.
- Skilled at building meaningful relationships across organizational boundaries.
- Active Top Secret security clearance.
