About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled PhD researcher to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a PhD Researcher in Autonomous Systems, you will be part of a dynamic team that is pushing the boundaries of autonomous systems research and development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and development in autonomous systems, including guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms, sensor systems, and modeling and simulation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and develop advanced autonomous systems, including hypersonic missiles, submarines, cruise missiles, and autonomous flight vehicles.
  • Develop and apply multi-disciplinary optimization techniques for early phase vehicle designs.
  • Test and validate software and algorithms within an embedded systems environment.
  • Develop software to support advanced simulations and algorithm development.
  • Engage with the broader technical community through papers, presentations, and technical reports.
Requirements
  • PhD in an Engineering Field, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • Classroom experience in one or more of our core skills: guidance and controls, RF or EO/IR sensors, modeling and simulation, inertial navigation, embedded systems, software development, artificial intelligence, optimization, and dynamics.
  • Skilled in or have knowledge of coding practices in Matlab/Simulink, C++, Python, or other languages.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in proposing new ideas for research and development.
  • Track record of publishing research in scholarly journals or conferences.
  • Intern or professional experience developing and analyzing control/dynamical systems or sensors.
