About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Model-Based Systems Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. As a key member of our navigation systems team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the US Navy has the most accurate and reliable navigation systems in the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide systems engineering thought leadership and expertise focusing on requirements analysis, concept/technology assessments, and test & evaluation for maritime navigation systems supporting the US Navy's strategic and conventional missions.
  • Develop an understanding of current and future maritime navigation capabilities, as well as insight into evolving mission needs, to assist in the development of requirements.
  • Lead/coordinate analysis on current and future navigation system capabilities and performance, providing supporting data and associated recommendations to advise program sponsors.
  • Deliver formal presentations and/or well-written technical documents to sponsors and contractors that effectively communicate analysis results and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with a highly talented and motivated team of mathematicians, engineers, and physicists focused on navigation analysis, with opportunities to work with other innovative experts from various technical fields.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience performing systems engineering in the design, development, or evaluation of complex systems.
  • Proven experience developing and refining functional and physical systems and systems of systems architectures.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills, with the ability to document and present work to APL colleagues and government sponsors.
  • Familiarity with US Department of Defense (preferably US Navy) technical and programmatic processes.
  • General understanding of maritime navigation technical concepts and/or US Navy operations.
  • Ability to obtain Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated understanding of US Navy surface and subsurface navigation concepts.
  • Skilled in conceptual design, requirements analysis, conducting trade studies, test and test program planning across the system lifecycle, and risk analysis and management.
  • Familiarity with US Navy Strategic Systems Programs technical and programmatic processes.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering software, especially model-based systems engineering tools like Magic Draw, DOORS, Cameo Enterprise Architecture, and MATLAB Simulink.
  • Strong knowledge of SysML in support of specification, analysis, design, verification, and validation of systems and systems of systems.
  • Top Secret security clearance.
