Director of Finance / Grants & Contracts

Point Blue Conservation Science is seeking a seasoned grants administrator to lead the oversight, budgeting, and compliance of over $75 million in various grants and contracts from federal, state, and local sources. This role reports directly to the CFO and manages a dedicated team of four professionals, focusing on multiple priorities while driving for high-quality outcomes. The position emphasizes clear communication and effective collaboration with both external funders and internal stakeholders.

As a nonprofit organization, Point Blue is committed to addressing climate change, habitat degradation, and other environmental challenges through innovative, nature-based solutions that benefit both wildlife and communities. Our organization consists of over 160 staff and scientists who work alongside various partners, including land and water managers, farmers, and local governments, to enhance ecological health.

Key Responsibilities

In the capacity of Finance Director for Grants & Contracts, you will:

  • Oversee accurate and timely financial reporting, communication, and invoicing for all grants and contracts, ensuring optimal funding utilization and prompt receivable collections.
  • Establish financial and compliance frameworks for all grant activities, meticulously tracking contract balances and expenditures.
  • Develop and uphold policies, procedures, and guidelines while providing necessary training to staff.
  • Manage agreements with subcontractors and subgrantees, ensuring compliance with vendor contracts and funder requirements.
  • Act as the Finance Lead for Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) block grants, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant state and agency regulations.
  • Collaborate with the CFO, Controller, and Senior Management on budgeting, financial analysis, and strategic planning.
  • Work closely with program staff to craft proposals, identify matching fund sources, and maximize funding opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships with both internal colleagues and external partners.
Summary of Key Qualifications
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in nonprofit accounting or grant administration, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of cost accounting, financial management systems, GAAP, and Federal OMB CFR-200.
  • Experience with California State and Federal grants, including the management of complex grants and contracts from inception to completion.
  • Proven track record in managing large sub-granting/subcontracting programs, budget creation, and internal control evaluation.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate and influence budgetary decisions.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with the ability to communicate effectively across all organizational levels.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with a results-oriented approach to managing multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a history of sound judgment and the ability to communicate the financial implications of decisions.
  • Familiarity with Vena or similar budgeting and financial management software, along with proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly MS Excel.
  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
