**Job Summary**

MedStar Health is seeking a skilled Histotechnician II to join our team in the preparation and preservation of surgical tissue specimens and cytopathology specimens. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in clinical laboratory science and be able to apply technical knowledge with accuracy in the completion of complex tests.

**Key Responsibilities**

  • Prepare individual work areas, set up equipment, and cut, stain, and mount specimens of human tissue, including bone tissue following bone decalcification.
  • Prepare paraffin sections of tissues, recognize technical problems, and take corrective action.
  • Perform routine and special stains and techniques on surgical and autopsy pathology case material.
  • Evaluate and cut specimens for histology processing, recognize factors that affect staining aspects, and assess adequacy of staining sectioning.
  • Take corrective action to improve stain results, notify supervisor of quality control problems, and perform validation studies.
  • Cross-train in areas according to department needs, evaluate normal/abnormal tissue components, orient and embed tissue specimens correctly, and cover slides once stained.
  • Distribute stained specimens to pathologists or other designated personnel, complete pathologist requests for additional levels of tissue specimens, and recut tissue specimens as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of frozen sections, provide direction in the preparation of decalcified bone tissue, and decontaminate counter surfaces, instruments, and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  • Prepare biopsy tracking logs, noting designated cases with various category codes.

**Requirements**

  • Associate's degree or higher-level degree or equivalent training in Histotechnology.
  • 3-4 years of experience in histotechnology, with ASCP certification as a Histotechnician or eligibility.
  • Considerable and current knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of clinical laboratory science, with the ability to apply technical knowledge with accuracy in the completion of complex tests.
