Job Summary

This Histotechnician II role is responsible for preparing and preserving surgical tissue specimens and cytopathology specimens submitted to the Laboratory for gross examination, fixing, embedding, sectioning, and staining before submitting to the Pathologists for microscopic examination and diagnosis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Prepare individual work areas, set up equipment, and cut, stain, and mount specimens of human tissue, including bone tissue following bone decalcification.
  • Prepare paraffin sections of tissues, recognize technical problems, and take corrective action.
  • Perform routine and special stains and techniques on surgical and autopsy pathology case material, assess staining quality, and take corrective action.
  • Evaluate normal/abnormal tissue components, orient and embed tissue specimens correctly, and cover slides.
  • Complete pathologist requests for additional tissue levels, recut tissue specimens as needed, and assist in preparing frozen sections.
  • Decontaminate work areas, instruments, and general workspaces according to laboratory protocol.
  • Prepare biopsy tracking logs, noting designated cases with various category codes.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher-level degree or equivalent training in Histotechnology, including 12 hours of biology or chemistry.
  • 3-4 years of experience preferred, with ASCP Certification as a Histotechnician or eligibility required.
  • Considerable knowledge of clinical laboratory science principles, methods, and techniques, with ability to apply technical knowledge with accuracy.
