The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is looking for skilled individuals for the position of Equine Care Specialist.
General Overview
This role involves performing maintenance tasks and providing riding instruction at a horse rental facility and farm animal exhibit within a county regional park.

Responsibilities include the routine care and upkeep of horses and farm animals, which encompasses grooming, administering medication, treating injuries and illnesses, maintaining stalls, pastures, and fencing, as well as ensuring the cleanliness and security of the animal exhibit area. The specialist will lead group trail rides and/or conduct riding lessons, manage the rental of trail horses and pony rides, and educate the public about equine and farm animal care.

The position operates under close or general supervision in accordance with established procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements A minimum of six (6) months of experience in the maintenance and operation of horse stables or farms, or closely related fields, including six (6) months of experience in instructing novice riders is required.

Special Certifications and Licenses A valid Florida E Class Driver's License must be maintained throughout the duration of employment.

Preferences Flexibility to work a varied schedule that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays is essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following functions represent the primary responsibilities of this role. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.

- Assists with riding instruction, horse training, camps, and leading public trail rides.

- Conducts maintenance work in the horse rental facility and farm animal exhibit area, ensuring all areas are kept clean and orderly.

- Participates in the routine care and maintenance of horses and farm animals, including health care, medication administration, and injury treatment as directed; maintains health records for horses and livestock.

- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining tack and related equipment.

- Aids in managing the horse rental facility and livestock exhibit area.

- Supports the implementation of various educational programs related to farm and animal science for the public.

- May be tasked with collecting payments from patrons or school groups for educational farm field trips.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

The role requires physical exertion and coordination of body movements. For the safety of our horses, a weight limit of 225 pounds for riders is enforced.

The position involves medium to heavy work, including walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing, and raising objects, with the need to exert between 25 to 50 pounds of force regularly and over 50 pounds occasionally.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

This position involves routine exposure to animals and wildlife, which may lead to potential health hazards despite precautions.
