REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Equine Care Specialist.
General Overview
This role involves performing maintenance tasks and providing riding instruction at a horse rental facility and farm animal exhibit within a county regional park.

Responsibilities include participating in the daily care and upkeep of horses and farm animals, which encompasses grooming, administering medication, and treating injuries and illnesses. The role also involves maintaining stalls, pastures, and fencing, ensuring the cleanliness of the animal exhibit area, and safeguarding the animals. Additionally, the specialist will lead group trail rides and conduct riding lessons, manage the rental of trail horses and pony rides, and educate the public about equine and farm animal care.

Work is conducted under close or general supervision following established procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Requires a minimum of six (6) months of experience in the maintenance and operation of horse stables or similar environments, including six (6) months of experience in instructing novice riders.

Special Certifications and Licenses Must possess and maintain a valid Florida E Class Driver's License throughout the duration of employment.

Preferences Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays is essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following functions represent the primary responsibilities of this position. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.

- Assist with riding instruction, horse training, and leading public trail rides.

- Conduct maintenance work in the horse rental facility and farm animal exhibit area, ensuring both interior and exterior spaces are kept clean and organized.

- Participate in the routine care and maintenance of horses and farm animals, including health care, medication administration, and injury treatment as directed; maintain health records for horses and livestock.

- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining tack and related equipment.

- Assist in managing the horse rental facility and livestock exhibit area.

- Support the implementation of various educational programs related to farm and animal science for the public.

- May be required to collect payments from patrons or school groups for educational farm visits.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. For the safety and wellbeing of our horses, as well as our patrons and staff, we have a weight limit of 225 pounds for riders.

This position involves medium to heavy work that includes walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing, and raising objects, requiring the exertion of 25 to 50 pounds of force regularly and over 50 pounds occasionally.

Unavoidable hazards refer to job conditions that may lead to injury or health risks despite precautions being taken.

The role involves routine and frequent exposure to animals and wildlife.
